Château de La Roche-Guyon

Perched against a chalk cliff above the Seine, the Château de La Roche-Guyon spans a thousand years of history — from a troglodytic fortress carved invisibly into the rock to an 18th-century aristocratic residence where Enlightenment thinkers once gathered. Climb the 270 steps through a secret underground passage to reach the medieval keep, where panoramic views stretch across the Vexin countryside and the river below. The restored 3-hectare Potager-Fruitier kitchen garden, designed in its original 18th-century layout, produces organic vegetables you can buy on-site. Rommel's WWII bunkers, carved into the cliff when he used the castle as his headquarters in 1944, add a striking modern chapter to the visit. The castle is open from April to November (10:00–18:00 daily); plan your visit accordingly as it closes through winter.
