About Arlette's Fountain
This outdoor fountain marks the legendary spot where Robert the Magnificent, Duke of Normandy, first saw Arlette washing clothes in 1027. Their encounter led to the birth of William the Conqueror. The original medieval fountain was destroyed during WWII bombardments in August 1944 and reconstructed in 1957 as part of Falaise's post-war rebuilding.

According to legend, when Robert invited Arlette to the castle, she refused to enter secretly. She demanded to arrive on horseback through the main gate in full view of everyone, establishing herself as his equal rather than a hidden mistress. This bold act earned her respect and secured her son William's recognition as Robert's heir.
