About Church of Saint-Germain des Prés
Saint-Germain-des-Prés is the oldest church in Paris, founded in 543 AD by Merovingian King Childebert I to house relics brought from Spain. The building combines Romanesque and early Gothic architecture — its bell tower dates to 1014, making it the oldest in the city, while the choir (circa 1150) is one of the earliest Gothic structures in France, predating Notre-Dame. Inside, visitors find Hippolyte Flandrin's 19th-century biblical murals lining the nave beneath a deep blue vault decorated with golden stars.

The church's original roof was covered in gold, earning it the nickname "Saint-Germain-le-Doré" (Golden Saint-Germain). The gilding was lost during Viking raids that destroyed the monastery twice in the 9th century.
