About Church of Saint-Jean
28 meters to the northwest, a defect that prevented the church from ever being fully completed. Despite suffering severe damage during the Battle of Caen in 1944 when it stood alone amid the ruins of its neighborhood, the church was meticulously restored over 20 years and reopened in 1964. Inside, visitors can admire modern stained glass windows by artist Danièle Perré installed in 1969, and the "Burned Christ" - a large wooden crucifix charred during the 1944 bombardment that serves as a powerful symbol of the city's wartime suffering.

During excavation work in 2013, archaeologists made an exceptional discovery beneath the church floor: an ensemble of beautifully engraved medieval tombstones dating from the 13th-14th centuries. Earlier excavations in 1954-1956 had already unearthed monolithic stone sarcophagi, revealing that this site served as a small necropolis along an ancient Roman road long before the church was built.
