About Martainville Manor
The Château de Martainville is one of the finest examples of early Renaissance architecture in Normandy, built between 1485 and 1495 by wealthy Rouen merchant Jacques Le Pelletier. This beautifully preserved castle features distinctive red and black brick walls decorated with glazed patterns of hearts, crosses, and diamonds, combined with white Vernon stone. Since 1961, it houses the Museum of Norman Arts and Traditions, displaying an exceptional collection of Upper Norman furniture spanning the 15th to 19th centuries across 28 rooms.

The Château de Martainville served as the architectural inspiration for the famous Château de Chenonceau in the Loire Valley. Thomas Bohier, general des finances de Normandie, visited Martainville and was so impressed by its innovative design that he incorporated similar elements when building Chenonceau in the early 16th century.
