About Mémorial de Caen
The Mémorial de Caen is one of Europe's most important museums dedicated to 20th-century history, focusing on World War II, the D-Day landings, and the Cold War. Inaugurated by President François Mitterrand on June 6, 1988, the 44th anniversary of D-Day, the museum is built on the site of a former German bunker that served as General Wilhelm Richter's command post during the Battle of Normandy. The massive 14,000 m² complex on three levels features 5,600 m² of permanent exhibitions exploring the causes and consequences of World War II, the decisive Allied landing operation, and the underground German bunker that played a crucial role during the first weeks of the battle.

The Mémorial de Caen sits directly above General Wilhelm Richter's authentic World War II command bunker, which visitors can explore today. This underground fortification coordinated German defenses during the crucial first weeks of the Battle of Normandy in 1944, making the museum's location itself a piece of living history.
