About National Archives Museum
The National Archives Museum occupies the Hôtel de Soubise, an 18th-century aristocratic mansion in the Marais district of Paris. The building traces its origins to 1371, when military commander Olivier de Clisson built a fortified residence on this site — the medieval turreted gateway still stands as the only surviving example of 14th-century private architecture in Paris. The current mansion was rebuilt between 1704 and 1712 by architect Pierre-Alexis Delamair, with a colonnaded horseshoe-shaped courtyard.

The museum holds the Armoire de Fer (Iron Cabinet), a fireproof strongbox commissioned by the National Assembly in 1790 to safeguard France's most important constitutional documents. It still contains the original constitutions from the First Republic through the Fifth Republic, each with their official seals intact.
