About The Marais
Le Marais is one of Paris's most captivating historic neighborhoods, spanning the 3rd and 4th arrondissements on the Right Bank. Its name means 'the marsh' in French, recalling the swampland that religious orders drained in the 12th century. The district became the preferred address of Parisian nobility in the 17th century, who built magnificent private mansions known as hôtels particuliers — many of which now house world-class museums including the Musée Picasso and the Musée Carnavalet.

The name 'Marais' means 'marsh' or 'swamp' in French. Until the 12th century, the area was genuine marshland that the Knights Templar and other religious orders gradually drained and cultivated, transforming it into one of Paris's most desirable districts.
