About Saint-Jacques Tower
The Saint-Jacques Tower is a 52-meter Flamboyant Gothic bell tower in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, the sole surviving remnant of the Église Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie. Built between 1509 and 1523 by master mason Jehan de Felin, the tower originally served as the bell tower of a medieval church patronized by the wealthy butcher guild of Les Halles. The rest of the church was demolished during the French Revolution in 1797, but the tower was spared and later restored under architect Théodore Ballu during the Second Empire.

The church was named "de la Boucherie" (of the butchery) because it was patronized and partly funded by the wealthy butcher guild of the nearby Les Halles market. Their financial generosity funded the ornate Flamboyant Gothic decoration visible on the tower today.
