About Paris City Hall
The Paris City Hall has served as the seat of municipal government since 1357, when Étienne Marcel acquired a building on this site for the city's administration. The current Neo-Renaissance structure dates to 1874-1882, rebuilt by architects Théodore Ballu and Édouard Deperthes after the original was destroyed by fire during the Paris Commune in 1871. The facade stretches 143 metres and features over 100 statues of notable Parisians including Voltaire, Molière, and George Sand.

The French word for labour strike — "grève" — originates from the square in front of this building. The Place de Grève (now Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville) was where unemployed workers gathered hoping to find work. When they collectively refused to work, they were said to "faire grève" — go to the Grève. The expression stuck and became the standard French term for industrial action.
