About Notre-Dame Cathedral
Notre-Dame de Paris, a masterpiece of French Gothic architecture, stands majestically on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris. Construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and was largely completed by 1260, making it one of the earliest large-scale Gothic cathedrals in the world. The cathedral is renowned for its pioneering use of flying buttresses, its magnificent rose windows, and its iconic twin bell towers rising 69 meters above the ground.

The cathedral's famous bells each have their own name. The largest, Emmanuel, weighs over 13 tonnes and has rung since 1685. It is the only medieval bell to have survived the French Revolution, when most others were melted down for cannon.
