About Saint-Séverin Church
Saint-Séverin is a Flamboyant Gothic church in the heart of the Latin Quarter, built between the 13th and 16th centuries on a site sacred since the 6th century. The interior centers on a double ambulatory with a striking twisted spiral column—sometimes called "the Palm Tree"—where stone ribs fan upward into vaulting unlike anything else in Paris. Seven abstract stained glass windows by Jean Bazaine, installed in 1970, fill the ambulatory chapels with saturated color depicting the seven sacraments.

In January 1474, the first documented surgical operation for kidney stones was performed in the church's charnier. King Louis XI offered a condemned prisoner a royal pardon if he survived the experimental procedure—and he did, walking free afterward.
