About Latin Quarter
The Latin Quarter is one of Paris's oldest neighborhoods, spanning the 5th and part of the 6th arrondissement on the Left Bank of the Seine. Its name dates to the Middle Ages, when students and scholars at the University of Paris — founded in the 12th century — spoke Latin as their everyday language. The quarter sits on Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, built directly over the ruins of the Gallo-Roman city of Lutetia, and its main streets (Rue Saint-Jacques, Boulevard Saint-Michel) still follow the original Roman road grid from the 1st century AD.

After the May 1968 student uprising, when protesters tore up cobblestones and hurled them at police, the Paris municipality systematically replaced cobblestones with asphalt across much of the quarter to prevent this from happening again. A few stretches of original cobblestones were deliberately preserved as a historical gesture.
