About Panthéon
The Panthéon stands at the heart of Paris's Latin Quarter as France's most solemn monument — a secular temple dedicated to the memory of its greatest citizens. Built between 1758 and 1790 by architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot at the command of King Louis XV, it was originally intended as a grand church to honour Saint Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris. The French Revolution intervened before it could open its doors for worship, and in 1791 the National Assembly transformed it into a mausoleum for distinguished French men and women.

Originally commissioned as a church by King Louis XV in 1758, the Panthéon was never used for worship. The French Revolution transformed it into a secular mausoleum in 1791 before it could be consecrated, making it one of history's grandest buildings that never fulfilled its original purpose.
