About Sainte-Chapelle
Sainte-Chapelle is a masterpiece of Rayonnant Gothic architecture, built between 1241 and 1248 by King Louis IX to house Christianity's most precious relics, including the Crown of Thorns. Located on the Île de la Cité within the former royal palace complex, this jewel-like chapel is celebrated for its extraordinary stained glass windows — fifteen towering panels and a magnificent rose window containing 1,113 individual scenes depicting biblical narratives from Genesis to the Apocalypse. The effect of sunlight streaming through over 600 square metres of 13th-century glass transforms the upper chapel into a luminous kaleidoscope of colour.

King Louis IX paid 135,000 livres tournois for the Crown of Thorns and fragment of the True Cross — more than three times the 40,000 livres it cost to build the entire chapel. The building was essentially a monumental jewel box designed for relics worth far more than their container.
