About Archeological Crypt of the Parvis of Notre-Dame
The Archaeological Crypt of the Île de la Cité sits beneath the parvis of Notre-Dame Cathedral, displaying over 2,000 years of Parisian history across a 200-metre underground gallery. Opened in 1980 after excavations in the 1960s revealed Gallo-Roman port quays, public baths with a hypocaust heating system, a 4th-century defensive wall, medieval house foundations, and 19th-century Haussmannian sewers. The site was originally slated for an underground car park, but the archaeological discoveries led to the creation of Europe's largest archaeological crypt instead.

The entire site was discovered because Paris planned to build an underground car park beneath the Notre-Dame parvis in 1962. The excavations revealed such significant Roman and medieval ruins that the car park project was abandoned entirely, and France's first purpose-built archaeological crypt museum opened in its place in 1980.
