About Church of Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, Paris
One of the oldest parish churches on the Right Bank of Paris, dedicated to Saints Gervasius and Protasius, early Christian martyrs from Milan. A place of worship has stood on this site since the 6th century, serving fishermen and boatmen near the old port at Place de Grève. Construction of the current building began in 1494 and took 163 years to complete, resulting in a striking mix of Flamboyant Gothic interiors and a Classical Baroque facade designed by Salomon de Brosse in 1616-1621 — the first of its kind in Paris.

On Good Friday, 29 March 1918, a shell fired by a German "Paris Gun" from over 120 km away struck the church during crowded Easter vespers. The roof of the nave collapsed, killing 91 people and wounding 68. The gunners had no specific target — the shell hit the church by chance. It remains the deadliest single civilian bombing incident in Paris during World War I.
