About O Castle (Château d'Ô)

The Château d'Ô is a 15th-century castle built on an island in the Thouanne river, creating a mirror-like reflection in the surrounding moat. Construction began in 1449 after the original 11th-century fortress was destroyed during the Hundred Years' War. The architecture blends Flamboyant Gothic elements with Renaissance and Henri IV styles, as the castle was expanded over several generations by the d'O family, one of Normandy's oldest noble lineages. The most famous resident was François d'O, finance minister to King Henri III, who added two wings and lavishly decorated the interiors. Visitors can see the guard room, great gallery, and the Salon des Muses with its restored trompe-l'oeil fresco depicting Apollo and the Muses. The château is privately owned and opens only about 40 days per year, primarily in summer. Reservation is required as tours are limited to 15 people and conducted in French only. Contact by phone (+33 2 33 12 67 46) or email well in advance.

Interesting Facts

The d'O family name, consisting of just a single letter, has caused administrative headaches throughout history. Robert d'O, the first known family member, accompanied Duke Robert I the Magnificent of Normandy on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1035, making this one of the oldest documented noble lineages in France.
Behind a roughly painted wall in the Salon des Muses, restorers discovered a hidden fresco depicting Apollo surrounded by the nine Muses. A specialist from the Louvre spent 8 months meticulously scraping each section with cotton swabs to reveal this forgotten masterpiece, which symbolized François d'O's lavish lifestyle at the royal court.
