About Scriptorial of Avranches
The Scriptorial d'Avranches is France's only museum dedicated exclusively to medieval manuscripts. Opened in 2006, it houses 203 manuscripts from the ancient Abbey of Mont Saint-Michel, along with over 39,000 printed books from religious establishments in the region. The museum spans 1,500 square meters within medieval fortifications, displaying 12 original manuscripts in its Treasure Room on quarterly rotation.

The Mont Saint-Michel manuscripts survived the French Revolution only because the abbey's librarian, Nicolas de Villiers, secretly hid them in Avranches in 1791. Without his intervention, these priceless documents would likely have been destroyed like countless other religious artifacts across France.
