About Victor Hugo's House
The Maison de Victor Hugo occupies the second-floor apartment at 6 Place des Vosges where the writer lived from 1832 to 1848, during one of his most productive periods. Hugo wrote major portions of Les Misérables and began La Légende des Siècles in this 280-square-meter apartment, which also served as a gathering place for figures like Alexandre Dumas and Honoré de Balzac. The museum opened in 1903 thanks to Hugo's friend Paul Meurice, who donated his personal collection and financed additional acquisitions.

Hugo worked standing up at a specially raised desk, a habit he maintained throughout his life. The desk in his study is noticeably taller than the surrounding furniture, and visitors can see exactly the posture he adopted while writing some of the most celebrated novels in French literature.
