About Vosges Square
Place des Vosges is the oldest planned square in Paris, built between 1605 and 1612 under King Henri IV. The perfectly symmetrical layout measures 140 by 140 metres and consists of 36 brick-and-stone pavilions with uniform facades, steep slate roofs, and ground-floor vaulted arcades running along all four sides. Two larger pavilions stand out: the Pavillon du Roi on the south side and the Pavillon de la Reine on the north.

Henri IV's original plan was not a residential square but a silk and linen factory complex to compete with Milan. Workers would live upstairs, produce goods on middle floors, and sell from ground-floor shops. The concept shifted to a royal square before construction began, and Henri IV himself never saw it finished — he was assassinated in 1610, two years before the inauguration.
