Château de Rosa Bonheur

Step into the world of Rosa Bonheur, the most acclaimed female painter of the 19th century, at her château nestled on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. The estate preserves her Neo-Gothic studio with soaring ceilings and vast windows, her private living quarters left almost exactly as they were at her death in 1899, and tranquil gardens where she once kept a menagerie of animals as live models. Among the personal effects on display is a Native American costume gifted by Buffalo Bill Cody himself, a memento of their unlikely friendship. The château is open Wednesday through Sunday, and online booking is mandatory.
