About Château de Rosa Bonheur
The Château de Rosa Bonheur, also known as Château de By, is a preserved artist's studio-home in the hamlet of By near Thomery, on the edge of the Fontainebleau forest. Rosa Bonheur, the most celebrated female painter of the 19th century, purchased this 15th-century estate in 1859 with proceeds from her monumental painting "The Horse Fair" and lived here for 40 years until her death in 1899. The property features a purpose-built Neo-Gothic studio designed by architect Jules Saulnier, with high ceilings and large windows for natural light.
