About Butin Beach
Butin Beach is Honfleur's principal public beach, a 500-meter stretch of fine sand located at the mouth of the Seine estuary. The beach holds Blue Flag certification (Pavillon Bleu) for its excellent water quality, rated Category A for swimming. At low tide, natural pools form between the shore and the Banc du Ratier sandbank, making it popular with families.

The name "Butin" means "loot" or "booty" in French. According to local legend, Honfleur pirates would light fires on this beach at night to mislead ships returning to port. The disoriented vessels would run aground on the sandbanks, allowing the pirates to plunder their cargo. The legend also mentions secret tunnels connecting the beach to the sailors' quarters in town, though their entrances have never been found.
