About Château de Langeais
The Château de Langeais stands directly on the main street of Langeais, overlooking the Loire River. Built between 1465 and 1467 by order of King Louis XI, the castle presents two contrasting faces: an austere medieval fortress from the town side, with thick walls, towers, and a working drawbridge, and an elegant late Gothic residence from the courtyard. On December 6, 1491, King Charles VIII secretly married Anne of Brittany here at dawn, a union that permanently attached the Duchy of Brittany to France.
