About Château de l'Islette
The Château de l'Islette is a privately owned Renaissance castle built around 1530 on the banks of the Indre River, roughly 2 km west of Azay-le-Rideau. Commissioned by René de Maillé, the building shares craftsmen and architectural details with the nearby Château d'Azay-le-Rideau — double string mouldings, mullioned windows, and a machicolated roofline are visible on both structures. The castle is best known as the summer retreat where sculptors Auguste Rodin and Camille Claudel spent several seasons together between 1890 and 1893, and two bronze casts of Claudel's work remain on permanent display.

Camille Claudel sculpted "La Petite Châtelaine" here in 1892, using 6-year-old Marguerite Boyer — the granddaughter of the château's then-owner — as her model. The bust went through several versions and titles before becoming one of Claudel's most recognized works. A bronze cast remains on display in the room where it was created.
