About Centre-Val de Loire
A Living UNESCO Landscape
Centre-Val de Loire wraps around the middle Loire River, France's last great wild waterway. The entire valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes holds UNESCO World Heritage status — a rare recognition of a living cultural landscape shaped by centuries of royal ambition, winemaking, and gentle riverside life.
From Medieval Fortresses to Renaissance Splendour
More than 300 châteaux punctuate the region, from the colossal hunting lodge of Chambord — with its 440 rooms and Leonardo-designed double-helix staircase — to the graceful arches of Chenonceau spanning the River Cher. Blois, Amboise, Villandry, and Azay-le-Rideau each tell a distinct chapter of French history.
Beyond the châteaux, two of France's most extraordinary Gothic cathedrals await. Chartres Cathedral dazzles with 176 medieval stained-glass windows, while Bourges Cathedral commands attention with its monumental nave — both UNESCO World Heritage Sites in their own right.
Why Visit Centre-Val de Loire
Centre-Val de Loire offers the highest concentration of châteaux on Earth, three UNESCO sites, and world-renowned wines — all just one hour from Paris by TGV.
Unrivalled Château Heritage
Over 300 châteaux dot the landscape, from the monumental Chambord to the romantic Chenonceau. Nowhere else can you visit so many architectural masterpieces in a single region.
Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites
The Loire Valley cultural landscape, Chartres Cathedral, and Bourges Cathedral give the region an extraordinary triple UNESCO distinction.
One Hour from Paris
Tours is just 60 minutes from Paris by TGV, making the region ideal for both day trips and extended stays without long travel times.
Cycling Paradise
The Loire à Vélo trail stretches 550 km through the region on flat, signposted paths linking châteaux, vineyards, and riverside villages.
World-Class Wine Region
With 50+ AOC appellations — including Sancerre, Vouvray, and Chinon — and over 400 vineyards welcoming visitors, wine lovers will find endless exploration.
Leonardo da Vinci's Legacy
The great Renaissance mind spent his final years in Amboise. His home at Clos Lucé and his tomb at the Royal Chapel are pilgrimage sites for art and history enthusiasts.

Best Time to Visit
May to June and September to October offer the best balance of pleasant weather, blooming gardens, and manageable crowds.

- •Joan of Arc Festival in Orléans (May)
- •Ideal cycling weather on Loire à Vélo
Summer
Peak season with warm days (20–26°C). All châteaux operate full hours and host evening sound-and-light shows. Expect larger crowds and higher prices.

Autumn
The grape harvest transforms the vineyards. Golden foliage lines the Loire. Temperatures remain pleasant at 14–20°C with noticeably fewer tourists.

Getting Around
Regional trains connect the main cities efficiently, but a car offers the most flexibility for reaching countryside châteaux. The Loire à Vélo cycling trail is an excellent alternative.
Train
TGV reaches Tours from Paris in 1 hour. The regional TER network links Orléans, Blois, Tours, Amboise, and Bourges with frequent departures.
Buy a TER day pass for unlimited regional train travel — great for city-hopping.
Car
The A10 motorway runs Paris–Orléans–Tours. A car is essential for visiting châteaux like Chambord and Cheverny that have limited public transport.
Rent from Tours or Orléans stations. Parking at most châteaux is free.
Bicycle
The Loire à Vélo offers 550 km of flat, signposted paths through the region. Bike rental is widely available in Tours, Blois, Amboise, and Orléans.
Some regional trains accept bicycles — combine cycling with train hops for maximum coverage.
Bus
The RÉMI coach network covers towns not on rail lines. FlixBus and BlaBlaBus also connect major cities to Paris.
Check remi-centrevaldeloire.fr for schedules. Services are less frequent on weekends.
Sub-regions at a Glance
The region spans six departments rooted in three historic provinces — Orléanais, Touraine, and Berry — each with its own character and attractions.
Practical Essentials
Tipping
Service is included by law in France. Rounding up or leaving small change (1–2€) for good service is appreciated but never expected.
Language
French is the primary language. English is widely spoken at major châteaux and hotels. Always greet with 'Bonjour' before switching to English — locals respond much more warmly.
Safety
Centre-Val de Loire is a very safe destination with low crime rates. Standard precautions at busy château sites and train stations are sufficient.
Drinking Water
Tap water is safe to drink throughout the region. Restaurants will serve it free on request ('une carafe d'eau, s'il vous plaît').
Customs & Etiquette
- •Greet staff with 'Bonjour' when entering shops and 'Au revoir' when leaving
- •Lunch is typically 12:00–14:00; many restaurants close between meals
- •Dress modestly when visiting cathedrals
- •Book château tickets online during peak season to avoid long queues
