About Royal Castle of Blois
The Royal Castle of Blois sits at the heart of the old town, overlooking the Loire River. Four distinct architectural wings surround a central courtyard, each built in a different era: a 13th-century medieval hall, the late Gothic Louis XII wing (1498-1503) with its red-brick facade and equestrian statue, the celebrated François I Renaissance wing (1515-1524) featuring an open octagonal spiral staircase, and the neoclassical Gaston d'Orléans wing designed by François Mansart in the 1630s. Seven kings and ten queens of France lived here between the 13th and 17th centuries.

On December 23, 1588, King Henri III had his rival Henri I, Duke of Guise, assassinated inside the royal apartments. The duke was summoned to the king's chamber and stabbed by royal guards as he entered. His brother, the Cardinal of Guise, was killed the following day. This double murder was a turning point in the French Wars of Religion.
