About Museum of Fine Arts of Blois
The Museum of Fine Arts of Blois occupies the first floor of the Louis XII wing within the Château Royal de Blois, a building constructed between 1498 and 1503 in a mix of Gothic and early Renaissance styles. Established in 1850 and moved to its current location in 1869 following renovations by architect Félix Duban, the museum holds the official "Musée de France" label since 2003. Its collection spans the 16th to 19th centuries and includes paintings, sculpture, tapestries, ceramics, ivory, furniture, and clocks — roughly 35,000 objects in total, with around 1,000 on permanent display.

One of the museum's most unusual works is a portrait of Antonietta Gonsalvus by the 16th-century female painter Lavinia Fontana. The young girl in the painting had hypertrichosis, a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair growth. Members of the Gonsalvus family were treated as curiosities and sent as living gifts between European courts during the Renaissance.
