About Church of Saint-Nicolas
Originally the abbey church of the Benedictine monastery of Saint-Laumer, this 12th-13th century building blends Romanesque and early Gothic styles across its choir, transept, and nave. Construction began in 1138, with the choir featuring some of the earliest ribbed vaulting in the Loire Valley, while the 13th-century nave draws clear influence from Chartres Cathedral. The church was renamed Saint-Nicolas in 1792 during the Revolution, borrowing the name from a smaller demolished nearby church.

The architect of the choir was among the first in France to use flying buttresses, an engineering breakthrough that allowed large windows to be opened beneath vaulted ceilings. This placed a provincial Benedictine abbey at the cutting edge of medieval construction technology, years before the technique became standard in Gothic cathedrals.
