About Jacques-Gabriel Bridge
The Jacques-Gabriel Bridge spans the Loire River in central Blois, connecting the historic north bank to the south. Designed by royal architect Jacques V Gabriel and built between 1717 and 1724, it was the first major public work completed under the reign of Louis XV. The 283-meter bridge features 11 arches arranged symmetrically with a distinctive humpback profile — the last of its kind surviving on the Loire.

The medieval bridge that stood here before had 22 arches and was roughly 320 meters long. It was destroyed on the night of February 6-7, 1716, when massive ice floes on the Loire smashed into its piers during one of the harshest winters on record. The Regent Philippe d'Orleans personally funded the replacement at a cost of 1,800,000 livres — not a single coin came from the city of Blois.
