About Cathedral of Saint-Louis
The Cathedral of Saint-Louis stands on a site of continuous Christian worship since the 6th century, making it one of the oldest religious locations in the Loire Valley. The current building dates from 1679-1702, rebuilt after a hurricane destroyed the previous church in 1678, with royal funding secured through finance minister Colbert. Architect Arnoult-Séraphin Poictevin chose a deliberately late Gothic style despite building during the Baroque era, giving the interior a distinctive anachronistic character with nine identical ribbed-vault bays and no transept.

The cathedral was rebuilt in late Gothic style between 1679 and 1702 — an extraordinary architectural decision at a time when all of France was building in Baroque and Classical styles. The architect deliberately chose this anachronistic approach to maintain visual continuity with the medieval tradition of the destroyed predecessor.
