About Château de Chambord
Chambord is the largest castle in the Loire Valley, commissioned by King François I in 1519 as a royal hunting lodge. The building features 426 rooms, 77 staircases, and 282 fireplaces across a design influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, who was living nearby as the king's guest architect. The centerpiece is a double helix staircase where two people can climb simultaneously without ever meeting, visible to each other through openings in the central column.

No one knows who designed Chambord. Despite being France's grandest Renaissance castle, the royal archives that would have named the architect were lost or destroyed in the late 18th century. Historians have debated the question for over two centuries without a definitive answer.
