About Stables of the Marshal of Saxe
The Stables of the Marshal of Saxe are a pair of 17th-century buildings on the southern esplanade of the Château de Chambord. The eastern building was completed in 1686 under Louis XIV, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart — the same architect behind the stables at Versailles. In 1748, Maurice de Saxe, the celebrated military commander who received Chambord as a reward for his victory at Fontenoy, raised the building by a floor to house his cavalry regiments.

Maurice de Saxe was the illegitimate son of Augustus II, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. Despite having over 350 known illegitimate half-siblings, he rose to become Marshal-General of France — the highest military rank in the kingdom. Louis XV gave him the entire Chambord estate as a personal gift for winning the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745, where he reportedly commanded while being carried on a litter due to illness.
