About Royal Church of Saint-Louis of Chambord
Built in 1666 at the request of King Louis XIV, this royal church stands on the site of a 12th-century Benedictine priory within the Domaine National de Chambord. It is the only church in France that belongs to the State rather than a municipality, as it sits inside the 32-kilometer walled royal estate. The neo-Renaissance building was enlarged in 1684 and extensively restored between 1839 and 1855 for Henri, Count of Chambord, the Bourbon pretender to the French throne.

During the French Revolution, the church was stripped of its religious artworks in 1792 and converted into a "Temple of Reason," renamed Notre Dame de Septembre. It only returned to Catholic worship after the revolutionary period ended.
