About Château de Chenonceau
Chenonceau is a 16th-century Renaissance chateau built over the River Cher in the Loire Valley, often called the "Ladies' Chateau" because women shaped its history at every stage. Thomas Bohier, a royal tax collector, commissioned the main building between 1513 and 1521 on the foundations of a former fortified mill. Diane de Poitiers, mistress of King Henri II, added the five-arch bridge across the river and created the first formal garden.

During World War II, the gallery spanning the Cher served as a secret escape route. The river marked the demarcation line between German-occupied northern France and the Vichy-controlled Free Zone to the south. The Menier family, who owned the chateau, allowed people fleeing Nazi persecution to cross through the gallery from the occupied side to relative safety on the southern bank.
