About Chanteloup Pagoda
The Chanteloup Pagoda is a 44-meter Chinese-style tower built in 1775 by the Duke of Choiseul, who commissioned it as a monument to friendship after being exiled from the court of Louis XV. The seven-story structure, designed by architect Louis-Denis Le Camus and inspired by the Kew Gardens pagoda in London, stands as the sole surviving element of a once-grand 18th-century palace complex demolished by the 1820s. Visitors climb 149 steps through an interior mahogany staircase to reach panoramic views of the Loire Valley, Amboise Castle, and the surrounding forest.

The pagoda was built as a personal monument to friendship. When the Duke of Choiseul was banished from Versailles in 1770, many courtiers risked royal disapproval to visit him in exile. He had the names of these loyal friends inscribed on the pagoda's base as a permanent record of gratitude.
