About Amboise Church of Saint-Florentin
This 15th-century Gothic parish church was built between 1470 and 1484 at the order of King Louis XI, who wanted townspeople to stop climbing to the castle's collegiate church during plague epidemics. Originally called Notre-Dame-en-Grève, it sits at the foot of the Château d'Amboise with its apse resting directly on the medieval city fortifications. The church underwent a major neogothic restoration in 1876, when the original wooden vault was replaced with stone and two side aisles were added.

Many English-language sources wrongly identify this church as Leonardo da Vinci's original burial place. In reality, Leonardo was buried in the Collégiale Saint-Florentin inside the castle walls — a completely different building that was demolished between 1806 and 1810. This surviving church simply shares the same patron saint's name.
