About Golden Island
The Île d'Or, also known as Île Saint-Jean, is a 2-kilometer-long natural island in the Loire River at the heart of Amboise, directly facing the Royal Château. Accessible on foot via the Pont du Maréchal-Leclerc, this free public park serves as the city's green lung with shaded plane-tree promenades, riverside walking paths, and open lawns for picnicking. The island has been continuously inhabited since at least the 6th century and is best known as the site where Frankish king Clovis I met Visigothic king Alaric II around 503–504 AD to negotiate a peace treaty.

The name "d'Or" (golden) likely comes from a lavish diplomatic banquet held with golden tableware when Clovis I and Alaric II met here around 503–504 AD. Despite swearing eternal alliance on this island, Clovis killed Alaric just three years later at the Battle of Vouillé in 507.
