About Amboise Clock Tower
The Tour de l'Horloge is a medieval gate-tower straddling Rue Nationale, Amboise's main street. Originally built in the 13th century as the fortified Porte d'Amasse, it marked the entrance to the walled town and served as a charity distribution point. Around 1495-1500, the gate was rebuilt into a belfry with two square upper storeys and a hexagonal bell tower topped with mullioned windows.

The American painter James Abbott McNeill Whistler, famous for his painting of his mother, was so taken by the tower that he created an artwork depicting it during his time in Amboise. The tower's silhouette against the Loire Valley sky caught his attention as a subject worthy of his characteristic atmospheric style.
