About Chapel of Saint-Hubert
The Chapel of Saint-Hubert is a small Flamboyant Gothic chapel built between 1491 and 1496 for King Charles VIII, perched at the edge of the Château Royal d'Amboise ramparts overlooking the Loire Valley. Carved from soft tuffeau limestone by Flemish sculptors including Casin d'Utrecht and Cornille de Nesve, it served as the private royal oratory for Charles VIII and Queen Anne of Brittany. The chapel's portal features an exceptional carved lintel depicting Saint Hubert's conversion — a kneeling hunter confronting a white stag with a crucifix between its antlers — alongside Saint Christopher carrying the Christ child.

Leonardo da Vinci was never buried in this chapel originally. He was interred in the Church of Saint-Florentin within the château grounds in 1519, as stated in his will. That church was demolished during the French Revolution, and his grave was lost for over 60 years. In 1863, museum inspector Arsène Houssaye excavated the site and identified bones based on circumstantial evidence — tombstone fragments with Leonardo's name and coins from Francis I's era. The remains have never been scientifically verified through DNA analysis.
