About Amboise Collegiate Church of Saint-Denis
The Collégiale Saint-Denis is the oldest building in Amboise, standing on a site used for worship since the 4th century when Saint Martin of Tours established an oratory here. The current Romanesque structure dates from 1107, commissioned by Hugues I, Lord of Amboise, and expanded over several centuries with Gothic vaulting, a Renaissance south aisle, and a Baroque high altar. Inside, visitors can admire some of the finest Romanesque carved capitals in the Loire Valley, depicting fantastical animals, biblical scenes, and a rare illustration from the Roman de Renart.

In 1498, the annulment of King Louis XII's marriage to Jeanne de France was pronounced inside this church. The decision freed Louis to marry Anne de Bretagne, uniting the Duchy of Brittany with the French crown — one of the most consequential political acts of early modern France, carried out not in a cathedral but in this parish church.
