About Château de Nacqueville
Château de Nacqueville is a 16th-century castle set within a 35-hectare English romantic garden, located 6 km west of Cherbourg on the Cotentin coast. Built from 1501 by Jean de Grimouville, the estate was transformed into a landscape park in 1830 by an English architect for the Tocqueville family. Alexis de Tocqueville, author of Democracy in America, described it as one of the prettiest places in the world.

During World War II, German forces occupied the estate from 1943-1944 and cut down over 2,000 trees to build Atlantic Wall defenses. The castle served as a Hitler Youth barracks during the occupation. Traces of camouflage paint applied by the Germans to hide the tower from Allied bombers were only fully removed during the 1990s restoration.
