About Emmanuel Liais Park
This 19th-century botanical garden was created by Emmanuel Liais, a French astronomer and explorer who served as Mayor of Cherbourg and director of Rio de Janeiro's Imperial Observatory. The park contains approximately 4,000 plant varieties collected from Brazil, Guyana, Oceania, Mexico, India, China, and South Africa. Two large greenhouses shelter tropical and desert plant collections, including a humid forest section with orchids and bromeliads, and a desert zone with cacti.
