About Umbrella Manufactory of Cherbourg
This working umbrella factory was founded in 1986 by Jean-Pierre Yvon, whose family has been leather craftsmen in Cherbourg since 1800. Housed in the former Banque de France building on Quai Alexandre III facing the port, the manufactory produces handcrafted umbrellas through 47 precise steps using traditional techniques. Visitors can observe seamstresses at work through large windows, explore the museum showcasing the brand's history and exceptional pieces created for luxury houses like Cartier and Moët & Chandon, and watch a film about the craft in the cinema room.

A Japanese manufacturer was so impressed by the Cherbourg umbrellas that they purchased the license in the early 1990s and opened their own factory in Japan, making it one of the few French artisanal techniques exported to Japan rather than the other way around.
