About Fort de Tourneville
Fort de Tourneville is a 19th-century military fortress built between 1854 and 1860 under Napoleon III, strategically positioned 140 meters above Le Havre on the city's heights. The fort was part of a defensive ring that successfully deterred Prussian forces during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), though it primarily served as infantry barracks throughout its military history. Today, this 6-hectare site has been transformed into a vibrant cultural hub housing 23 artistic associations, concert venues, theater companies, and the Municipal Archives.

Opening Hours
Open daily08:00 - 23:00
Despite being built as a formidable defensive fortress with thick vaulted walls and cisterns designed to withstand sieges, Fort de Tourneville never actually fired a single shot in combat. Throughout its entire military history from 1860 to 1976, it served exclusively as barracks - first for French infantry regiments, then briefly for German occupation forces during WWII, and finally for American liberation troops in 1944-1945.
