About National Sheepfold
The Bergerie Nationale is a historic working farm and agricultural research center nestled within the 800-hectare Domaine National de Rambouillet, about 50 km southwest of Paris. Founded by King Louis XVI in 1786 to house a flock of rare Merino sheep imported from Spain, it remains the only place in France preserving the pure Rambouillet Merino bloodline, maintained for over 230 years without crossbreeding.

The original flock of 366 Merino sheep walked 1,500 km from Segovia, Spain to Rambouillet over 119 days in 1786, escorted by four Spanish shepherds. Only one ram and 16 sheep were lost during the entire journey, an impressive survival rate for such a long overland trek in the 18th century.
