About Palais Royal Garden
The Palais Royal Garden is a formal French garden enclosed within the 17th-century Palais-Royal complex in the 1st arrondissement, steps from the Louvre. Cardinal Richelieu commissioned the palace in 1629, and the surrounding arcaded galleries were added in the 1780s by the Duke of Orléans, creating what many consider Europe's first covered shopping arcade. The garden stretches 240 meters with rows of linden trees, manicured lawns, and a central fountain.

On July 12, 1789, journalist Camille Desmoulins climbed onto a table outside the Café de Foy in the arcades and delivered the speech that sparked the French Revolution. He tore a leaf from one of the garden's linden trees to use as a revolutionary cockade. Two days later, the Bastille fell.
