About Church of Saint-Roch
A large Baroque church on rue Saint-Honoré in the 1st arrondissement, built between 1653 and 1740. King Louis XIV laid the foundation stone at age 14, and the church was designed by Jacques Lemercier, with later contributions from Jules Hardouin-Mansart. At 126 metres long, it rivals Notre-Dame in length and follows a north-south axis rather than the traditional east-west orientation.

On 5 October 1795, royalist insurgents massed on the church steps to march against the Revolutionary government. A 26-year-old General Napoleon Bonaparte was ordered to defend the Republic and opened cannon fire on the crowd, killing around 400 people. This decisive act launched Napoleon's political career and changed the course of European history. Cannonball marks remained visible on the façade for over 200 years until a restoration in the early 2000s.
