About Place Vendome
Place Vendôme is an octagonal royal square in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and built between 1699 and 1720 under King Louis XIV. The square features uniform classical stone facades that were constructed before the private buildings behind them, creating a striking visual coherence. At its center stands the 44-meter Vendôme Column, clad in bronze from cannons captured at the Battle of Austerlitz, with a spiral frieze depicting Napoleon's 1805 military campaigns.

The Vendôme Column was toppled by the Paris Commune on 16 May 1871. The painter Gustave Courbet, who had advocated for its removal as a symbol of militarism, was later ordered to pay 323,000 francs for its reconstruction. Unable to bear the financial burden, he fled to Switzerland, where he died in 1877 without ever paying the full amount.
